What They’re Doing: Valentina Pereda

Wondering about Valentina Pereda (alumni ’01, ’02 and ’04)?  Here’s what she has to say:

“I’ve gone a completely different direction from performing arts, although music will always be a part of my life. I do Latino outreach at the Democratic National Committee. Right now, we’re working with the Obama campaign to create and execute a strategy that will attract and engage Latino voters. As an emerging population, the Latino vote will be a decisive factor for this campaign and many more to come. One of the components of our strategy is getting celebrities like Eva Longoria, John Lenguizamo, etc. to use social media outlets (facebook, twitter) and write about issues that affect the Latino community/ encourage them to register to vote.”

What They’re Doing: Gabby Flores

Here’s the latest from Gabby Flores, alumni ’01–’05:

“It is wonderful to hear that the Summer Stars camp has been doing so well. It was a wonderful place that set a foundation for me in the performing arts and inspired me to pursue a career in the arts. I am very grateful for the experiences I had there as a camper. I am doing great! I am currently in my last semester At Adelphi University, graduating with a B.F.A in Theatre this May. After graduation, I plan on auditioning and looking for work. In the near future, I would like to attend graduate school. I want some real world experience before jumping back into school right way.”

What They’re Doing: Charmaine Santiago Galdon

Charmaine Santiago Galdon, a 2000 alum, let’s us know what she’s up to:

“I’ve continued pursuing theater as a career. I was Theater major at Umass Amerst with a concentration in Performance. Last fall, I had a an amazing opportunity to intern with a Puerto Rican off Broadway company, called Pregones Theater located in NYC. Since I was 15 I’ve been teaching theater for youth in the city of Boston. It started with a summer youth enrichment program called TAG located at UMass Boston. I’m an alumni there too. Right now I am Theater teaching artist at a non-profit organization in the South End of Boston called IBA (Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción). I’m also coaching a poetry team. We’re getting ready to compete in Massachusetts first teen poetry slam called Louder Than A Bomb. It’s in 9 days and it’s taking place at MIT. And I’m affiliated an artist of a collaborated women group called Not Enough Mics Collaborative.

All in all, my passion with acting, writing and directing, it has driven me so far in wanting to create change and inspire the youth and women as a positive role figure. So that’s basically a little bit of what I’ve been up to in the past lol. I’ve had a interesting journey so far and I’m blessed with all the great things I’ve accomplished so far, thanks to camp Summer Stars who set this rocket ship for me.”
